New York couple on ‘big walk’
By MICK KERSEY
Inspired by a book about a walk around the world, 26-year-old Chris Dyson and his companion 20-year-old Ingrid Johnson are in the first part of a trek that will take them across the United States. The couple began their tour on St. Patrick’s Day in Savannah with the ultimate destination set as Seattle, Wash., a path that will take them over 3,000 miles searching for the heart of America.
Both Dyson and Johnson hail from Massachusetts, but are currently living in New York City. He is a 2000 graduate from the School of Visual Arts and she is taking a two-year hiatus from her arts studies at Columbia University. They began dating in June of last year and began planning and saving for the journey in July.
They decided to choose Savannah as a starting point “because it’s warmer,” says Dyson. A friend, who was traveling to Florida, dropped them off for the Irish festivities in Savannah at the corner of Montgomery Crossroads and Congress Avenue. With no particular timeframe in mind, the explorers made it across the ensuing 100 or so miles in 22 days, soaking in the kindness that is uniquely southern. Dyson and Johnson say that restaurants and kind strangers have provided them with a few meals, but they mostly subsist on dehydrated foods they boil on their camp stove, protein bars and oatmeal. Along the way, people have allowed them to set up camp on their lawns or have outright taken them into their homes.
The duo spent two days passing through Swainsboro last week, telling their story and receiving encouragements from all who met these engaging dreamers. They explored the library, the local restaurants, the shopping centers and the newspaper office. They plan to head north from here through Kite and Wrightsville en route to Athens and then Atlanta. The couple is attempting to make it to Denver before late August and plan to spend the winter there to replenish their money supply and rest before tackling the mountains. Ultimately, after wintering in Colorado, they’ll continue the journey to Seattle and plan to arrive before August 2004. Ingrid is due back in class at Columbia University in September next year.
Dyson, who describes himself as nomadic by nature, says his journey was largely inspired by a book by Steve Newman entitled Worldwalk. In it, Newman describes his walk around the world. The walk took place in the mid-eighties and Newman took it on to see if there was still kindness in the world after hearing on television how awful people were worldwide. The book is Newman’s journal of the investigation.
Dyson and Johnson invite everyone they come in contact with to join them on their journey by tracking them through their website, appropriately called www.dontforgetus.net. A daily journal of happenings and kindnesses received along the way are posted regularly and pictures of the journey are promised soon.
When asked why he undertook such a project, Dyson said, “The purpose is to see everything and meet people across the way, plus it’s something you can talk about when you’re 90. I figure life is all about collecting as many stories as you can get. Throwing yourself out there is the best way to get those stories. When we told people in New York what we were doing they started taking bets on how long it would be before we were killed. People were telling us to bring guns to protect ourselves, but we didn’t. We know that there are crazy people out there, but for all the bad people you hear about doing bad things there’s probably about 40 times that many people that’ll do nice things or at least not bother you. A lot of people have offered us rides, we’ve gotten free dinners every now and again, free coffee, people offer us water all the time, and we actually stayed on two peoples’ front lawns. There’s a whole lot of generosity going on that you don’t hear about and I guess that’s what this (the walk) is all about, you just have to remind yourself that it’s still out there especially at a time like this when you’re at war.”
(Wednesday, April 23, 2003, 01:16:09)
Hey guys!! We miss you here in NYC! I heard from Cox that you might be coming home soon…We must have a dinner party then! Yay! And, after waling a couple of hundred miles, I strongly suggest that Chris be made to keep his shoes on! Anyway, happy belated birthday chris! Lots of love, christine

Hi Chris and Ingrid,
Thanks for mentioning me in your journal. What a pleasant surprise to see my name in print. I consider myself honored to have met you. After you walked away, I thought of lots of questions I wish I had asked. I’ve been reading your journal and find you both fascinating! A lot of my questions have been answered there. May you continue to encounter pleasant people along your way. I loved the story about the church congregation that prayed with you on Chris’ birthday….belated Happy Birthday, Chris! I got comfort from the story of the guy who gave you both a knife….glad to know you have some protection. (may you never need it!) Have fun, be safe and trudge on!!!
Your New Friend in Loganville,
Bonnie :)

Hi Chris and Ingrid. I was the girl part of the “young couple” you mentioned in your jounal. My husband, Pete, was with me. Sorry, the camping didn’t work out at Brisco. I am glad that you found a safe place to stay. I was encouraged by all of the nice people you have come across. It gives me hope in the people in our country. I teach at South Gwinnett High School which is the school where Pete and I saw you. I shared your journal entry with my students. They thought it was so cool. They are expecting you to make it to Ripley’s or something. Best wishes as you continue your journey. May you both learn about our great nation and yourselves. Sincerely, Kelsey.

Hi Chris and Ingrid,
Chris, I’m a friend of your sister Wendie out here in Seattle. Nice to hear about your travels in America.
Last month I returned from a little tour of my own in Italy and Greece; but this was by my 2 wheel horse. I recall that a full day on the bike was easier on my legs than a full day of walking around a city with a pack. My lower legs would be tight as knotted rope after a day of museums and sightseeing on foot and I couldn’t wait to be back in the saddle.
How have you dealt with the muscle fatigue? or does it matter?
Cheers
And bravo on your adventure, it’s a beautiful way to see the States.
Best of Luck
Daniel

Hey guys!
I’m Adrian-Erica’s roommate’s friend from Bowdoin… I was there for the mad fortune cookie/quasi-karaoke party. Anyway, I just wanted to let you know that I think you guys are way cool. What you’re doing is unique and is like a subtle slap in the face for all the meatheads our age who are leaping up the rungs of the corporate ladder and throwing their lives away. I wish you both luck and…well, screw luck. You guys win no matter what. You’re inspiring. Have fun.
(Sunday, June 1, 2003, 14:29:36)
Good luck and hope you have good walking shoes.

Well, I just sat here for about an hour looking at all the pictures you’ve posted and I must say it makes me feel a little better being able to see for myself where you’ve been. It eases my worries to see that you’ve actually been to some pretty cool places and looked healthy and intact in the pictures. You’re first camp sight was a horrific thing for me to see, but other than that you guys really look like you’re having fun! I really liked the picture with Johnny’s grandmother in the background…haha. Well for now the only thing left to say is BE CAREFUL. Chris, you’re protector of my Ingrid on this adventure of yours, so do your job and do it WELL! Ingrid I love you!
Love, Leski

Hi,
Enjoyed checking your website and tracking your progress. I guess I need to introduce myself, I’m Mrs. Powell, librarian at the Stevenson Public Library, Stevenson, Alabama, where you stopped today.
A few years ago, I rode to Seattle with my husband in a sixteen wheeler. I thought that was an adventure. I’m sure you’re in for a much greater one! I’ve read all the ‘Walk across America’ and ‘The Walk West’ books by Jenkins. These type journeys interest me very much. Be sure and write a book.
Good luck!!

Okay, here’s the deal everyone. I’ve gotten several concerned emails about Ingrid since young Arayana’s post in Shelbyville. She is fine, she twisted her knee in Atlanta, made it up to Sewanee, TN but had to go home by then. She was in too much pain and we didn’t want it to get worse. Hopefully she’ll be joining up with me again in August. As for the posts, Ingrid’s sister, Erica, our webdesigner is vigilantly fighting the data base company over the many glitches we’ve been having. She tells me if all is not well by Monday, June 30, she’ll switch companies and we’ll be back in business, so no later than mid-week should we have service again. Go get ’em Erica.
(Saturday, June 28, 2003, 09:47:22)
Ingrid, I met your mother at Sovereign Bank, where I work, she told me what you where doing and I thought it was absolutly amazing. I had to take a look on your site. I hope your knee heals for you soon and you will be able to continue.
Good luck and be careful.

Hi Chris,
As I send this message, I’ve just spoken with Mark and he tells me you’re still at this house. So, I don’t know if you make it to Dover to check this email today or not. In the event that you have gone when I get home this afternoon, I just wanted to let you know what a pleasure it was to have you stay with us. You were such a pleasure. I hope you enjoyed your time with us as much as we enjoyed having you stay. We’ll be checking the site to keep track of you on your journey.
Best of luck to you. You are a very courageous and ambitious young man. It was an honor to meet you.
God Bless You.

Hello Chris, I just read the article in our local newspaper (The Shelbyville Times Gazette) in Shelbyville, Tennessee. You had stopped in for a hair cut and a break in your adventure. I am sorry to hear about Ingrid’s knee, I hope she has a speedy recovery and can join back up with you real soon. I just want to wish you both the best of luck. I wish I was right there beside you because the United States is a beautiful place. I love to fly and that is about the only way I can see the US is from the air. I have taken a few road trips but only to Michigan, Florida or Mississippi so I have not really been able to see the country like you have and will.
If there is some place that cash or other donations can be made to help with your journey please let me know or post this on your website under the guestbook navigation icon. Maybe you can use Western Union and walk into any Western Union branch and get your money. It’s just a thought?
Well good luck and be safe. Take a lot of pictures and post them on the internet because I want to see what the country looks like from the ground.
Sincerely,
Robert L. Lehman II

Hi Chris,
I met you I believe in Tennessee. I was doing the across America bicycling trip (alan@cyclingcoast2coast.us) and heading east. Well, as for my trip it is over. I reached Myrtle Beach, SC on June 25 after about 45 days. I will be returning to work next monday and thought I would send you a quick e-mail wishing you good luck and safe travels. I think you will find as you go west that the roads are less traveled and the people are much friendlier. And in most places you can see for miles and miles. Stock up on sunscreen for Utah and Nevada!
Good luck,
Alan

Wow! You are doing something that most only dream about. Good luck! Have a safe trip, keep us updated on your whereabouts and your adventures along the way. Wasn’t the Corner House in Cowan, Tennessee, the best little hospitality restaurant around? I hope you enjoyed the view at Sewanee, too. This is the place I call home.

I’ve been following your trip since the article in “The Blade”. I am from Kite and know all the people who took you in while in that area. It speaks a lot for America that you are meeting nice people all across the country and enjoying an experience which very few people ever will. Good Luck.
(Saturday, July 12, 2003, 17:05:43)
Chris – met you at the Wal-Mart in Fredericktown MO & at the laundromat a little while later. I told you I envied you – and I do. I wish you the best. I came home and found something of interest. Chris McCandless – the young man from “Into the Wild” – had a copy of Tolstoy with him (“Family Happiness”. It was found next to him in Alaska w/ the following underlined: “I wanted movement and not a calm course of existence. I wanted excitement and danger and the chance to sacrifice myself for my love. I felt in myself a superabundance of energy which found no outlet in our quiet life.” You know what you’re doing. Keep walking.
(Saturday, July 12, 2003, 17:38:32)

If you happen to travel back through Michigan that is where my husband and i reside and i would be glad to help you on your way with a meal or any needs you might have. Mrs Cox knows my family and i could be contacted through her. Good luck.and I will keep reading.

Hey you guys! We met you at the Forest-Blade in Swainsboro, Georgia when our son’s Cub Scout group took a tour of the newspaper. I’ve been reading your journal and I must say that it’s as interesting as any book I’ve read. You are both very courageous and adventurous. Good luck on your journey and God Bless You!
(Friday, July 18, 2003, 13:09:00)
Hey Mr. Chris, I am so proud of you. You talked about doing this since you were little & now you are actually doing it! I remember when you & your Dad tried walking across Mass at age 11 yrs & had to turn back cause of the rain & trying to carry +60lbs of canned food on your little back. You never stopped talking about it though. Maybe your Dad will join you this time for awhile.
Its wonderful to read your stories of how kind everyone has been to you and how all your needs are being met so beautifully along the way. I admit I was very weary of this trip before you started but now can see what a blessing it’s been. I’m looking forward to either the book or film version of it someday. I’ve started a scrap book for you of all your writings & pictures. So if you or anyone else has anything they want to add to it mail it to me. I’d love some of the detail maps you are collecting.
Have a wonderful time & maybe we can fly out & meet you in Colorado during your winter stay there!!!
Lots of Love, MOM
(Friday, July 18, 2003, 16:08:11)
So. I guess this is my somewhat public departure from the trip. I won’t be rejoining Chris as I had thought, although not due to my knee. I wish him the best, and I hope he continues to meet wonderful people along the way, as I’m sure he will. For the however many miles I was with him, for all the great stories, and for all the amazing, kind people along the way, thank you.

Hi! I met Chris today at the library in Gerald, Missouri. After I had left I wished I had offered to let him camp at our farm. However, we live 12 miles from town so decided he wouldn’t have wanted to anyway. I looked up your web site because I thought this was a really interesting idea and thought since you were from New York the trip might be related to the 9/11 attack. It was not, and I was glad to just enjoy someone living out a dream. I am a teacher and will share this with my students. They are sixth graders. I know that there are a few profanities…however, most of my kids hear much worse and say much worse. I think this is a cool thing to do and wish you all the best. I didn’t finish reading all of the journal entries yet, so I’m not sure where Ingrid was when I saw you at the library. I will read more when I have time and find out. Continue your trip and don’t give up. You will never forget it! However, I do have one piece of advice…GET A HARLEY! ha ha
It was nice to meet you. ENJOY LIFE!

Hello Chris…
Well, we would love to tell you the story of our famous dog, but it’s a long one. The story is of Old Drum, the infamous dog. I moved here from Indiana so I will give you my version… lol. Old Drum belonged to a farmer here in Warrensburg. This farmer’s neighbor accused Old Drum of killing his chickens and warned Old Drum’s owner to keep Old Drum off of his property. The next time that Old Drum went onto the neighbor’s property, the neihbor shot him and killed him. The owner of Old Drum promptly sued the neighbor and there was a huge court case in the court house here in Warrensburg. This is supposedly where the phrase “man’s best friend” was coined about dogs. That’s why there is a statue of Old Drum on the courthouse lawn. That’s our little claim to fame. :o)
Anyway, it’s a true story and documented in the history books if you would like to know anymore about it. Good luck on your trip and keep us posted.
Anita

Sorry about the lack of updates! I’m planning on updating the map soon. Don’t blame Chris, it’s my fault!
(Thursday, August 7, 2003, 18:45:48)
Hey Chris,
Just wanted to let you know that we are still tracking your travels. You’ve certainly gone a long way since Cumberland City. We’ll continue to check in.
Stay safe.
(Friday, August 8, 2003, 11:34:19)
Chris:
I don’t know how I would have passed my summer if it hadn’t been for keeping tabs on your travels. It has been good pastime. You’ve gone a long distance since you and Ingrid stopped by the Stevenson Public Library and gave me your card.
I must say I was quite worried about you last week when you didn’t post for a week! Now that you’re getting farther west, be sure you keep a good stock of water. I know you’re going the backroads, but when we went out west, it seemed you would go FOREVER and not come across civilization.
(Friday, August 8, 2003, 16:00:51)
You stopped by in Weston last evening. My husband Mike talked to you and got your card. Hope you were able to find a spot to camp in town. We went searching for you down at the park but did not find you there, or we would have asked you to stay at our bed and breakfast. But we are sure you are now heading on your way to Atchison and we wish you all the best.
(Saturday, August 9, 2003, 08:41:18)
Chris-
You have horrible hobbit feet. They give me nightmares. At night, I often lie staring up at the ceiling, with the image of your feet haunting me. Those hairy splayed toes stare at me and taunt me. I know now how the GIs that liberated concentration camps in 1944 felt. I have seen horror, and it is your feet.
On the other hand, I still believe that you should finish the walk barefoot. That way, you could build up callouses and never wear shoes again.

Wednesday, August 13, 5:50 PM. 2 miles east of Home City, Kansas on Highway 36.
I saw Chris hoofing it westward and I was headed east. Something in me made me turn around and pull over.
I only talked briefly to you, pulled out my wallet and gave you my business card. I thought you might need money, but you refused.
I had an unopened Mountain Dew I had just bought which I offered you. You seem to be an undeterred person, weathered by time and the road.
Good luck in your journey.

let us know
(Monday, August 25, 2003, 14:19:51)
Chris,
I spoke to you briefly yesterday, 8/25 just outside a small town in Northwest Kansas. I think it was Oberlin or Norcatur. I told you I was from Colorado Springs and was out metal detecting for the weekend. I had problems because it was so hot my metal detector couldn’t handle it. It was great to talk to you. I would have loved to do what you’re doing when I was younger. Like I told you, I used to hitchhike with a backpack up to 1000 miles round trip. So I got a little taste of what you are doing. The endurance and dedication it takes to go as far as you have is really incredible. Physically, mentally and emotionally it has to be a real challenge. I would love to do it some day, but with 3 small kids and a wife, a house, etc, I don’t see it happening unless I do it when I’m 60! Maybe I’ll take a month and hike across Colorado some day. I love to backpack and I try to whenever I get a chance. In July, I took the family out for our first backpack trip. The three kids had small packs
with some food, water, and clothes. Cindy, my wife had a 50 pound pack, which is very heavy for her. She’s 5’2” and 125 pounds. Then I had a 100 pound pack (I weighed it!). We only went 2 miles in from our van, but it was a challenge. We had a great time though. The mosquitos were horrible and our spray didn’t keep them away. We don’t get a lot of mosquitos here, but if you’re in the right place at the right time after some big rains, they can show up in swarms.
I hope you have plenty of water and sunblock. You were showing some serious color on your face and you have a couple hundred miles+ to Denver with towns few and far between. At least the towns are at regular intervals of 10 to 25 miles, so with good planning you shouldn’t have a problem. There are a few homes along the way out there too. I’m sure you must get people stopping to offer you drinks too. That middle of the day in Kansas was really hot. I was shocked. I even had trouble sleeping because of the heat. When I got somewhere in Eastern Colorado in the evening, I finally felt some cool air. And this morning I went outside the house and it was nice and cool. The things you learn to appreciate!
I read some of your story. Looks like you are having some great adventures and the experience of a lifetime.
I wish you well and I’ll check your web site occasionally to see how you are doing. Have a great trip!
DuWayne

Hi, I met you in the Phillipsburg,Ks. City library. I am the one who had just read JOHNNY ANGEL by D. Steele and was upset with the book. Hope you are having a safe WALK. It was 106 in Ks. Yesterday. More later.

Enjoyed the short visit with you on highway #36 east of Oberlin about 15 miles. I am the farmer who was driving a red pickup. Since I am from Norton I enjoyed reading about your Saturday night in Norton particularly with the Ryans. I hope your duct tape holds out until Denver. Happy travels. Barnet Cox
(Saturday, August 30, 2003, 15:39:30)
Hi Chris,
The girl I work with met you at our grocery store in Atwood, Ks. She said she found you very interesting.
She told us your story and I thought it’s so cool that you are adventurous and doing “your thing”. Probably every parent’s “worst nightmare”…lol
Take advantage of it while you have your youth…go for it! We were just wondering how far you have gone since you landed in our little town.
Wishing you the best and good luck in your trek across the States!
Take care…we’re thinking about you.
(Tuesday, September 2, 2003, 10:10:19)

Chris, I just checked your adventures to find you in Colorado!! Hooray that you made it safely. The experiences you have encountered show all who read your travels that for the most part people are kind and caring. I wish you good times while in Co. and look forward to your 2004 pursuits. We are in the process of taking Erica to Logan airport as she enters her adventure working and living in France. My only disappointment, after having come to terms with this “parent’s nightmare adventure” and getting caught up in the readings of your experiences, is that Ingrid was not able to finish the trek with you. Please stay in touch. MOM JOHNSON

“I’m not gonna show up on your, like, website, am I?”
“No.”
My goodness, Chris.
Have a lovely day,

(Tuesday, July 27, 2004, 00:33:54)
Would you hurry up already. The internal combustion engine was invented almost 100 years ago and can carry you faster…farther…and most importantly much much more comfortable than even the newest pair of Air Jordans!!
You are probably sick and tired of that kind of humor arent you.
Good luck on the rest of this endeavor and welcome to your destination. I am sure you have discovered all kinds of stuff out about humanity, America, and most importantly yourself…Congradulations!!
I look forward to hearing all about this journey (and kicking your ass at Risk) when we get together again.
Lots of love….Cousin Troy
(Tuesday, July 27, 2004, 15:04:57)
Hi Chris,
We’re the family you met on Hwy. 22 near Toppenish on Saturday, 7/24. We saw you using one of the two cans of pop we gave you to cool your forehead as we drove away, and we hope you found the fruit stand! It was a scorcher.
God bless you. I’ve used the map of your travels to do a little schooling with my children…that’s a far walk!
Blessings,
The Vimonts
(Wednesday, July 28, 2004, 08:40:27)

Congratulations, my son!!!! You made it in one piece! Hurrah! We wish we were there to greet you, too, and to personally hand you 2 HUGE notebooks of all your writings, pictures, newspaper articles, etc of your journey that we’ve put together. What a tale you have to tell for the rest of your life and to them ‘kiddies and grandkids’ that we hope will some day follow. We’ll all see you in a few weeks to help fill that empty belly you keep telling us about. Can’t wait! Lots of love to you from Mom and Musty.

Chris,
Monica and I are excited and privaleged to have gotten the chance to meet and spend a great morning with you in our home. I’m glad that I chanced to cross your path on that July morning in the “big” town of New Plymouth, Idaho. You and your journey have given me a renewed faith and appreciation of the land and people of this country. You can bet I’ll use you and your strength, courage, and mental toughness in some lesson to my football players this year. I’m looking to have a cup of coffee in Denver with you. Thanks Chris!
Congratulations guy!!!

Dear Chris,
YOU made it!! “A journey of a thousand miles begins with one step” (Confucius) …and so it was born. 3000 miles (give or take), a few boots, etc. later, and you’ve conquered the task you set out on. You showed incredible curiosity, patience, perseverance, stick-to-it-iveness, and most of all a love of the process in your journey. Throughout your journal, you expressed a love of the people, the land, the freedom, the journey itself – you just loved your way across the country. I’m proud of you and what you’ve accomplished, and you should be, too. It was much bigger than a walk/hike across this country – much more. You made it into much more. I loved reading your journal along the way – you spoke volumes through it. I loved that you wanted to keep in touch with everybody and provided them a vehicle for them to keep in touch with you (and assuage their worries).
Now, it’s on to the “next chapter.” I’m sure that will be every bit as “readable” and enjoyable – I’m looking forward to it. A wise person once said, “Life is not a destination but a journey.” Thank you for reminding us of the truth in that statement.
I love you with all my heart, Dad:-) & Barb
